During World War I, Army Lieutenant Roy (Robert Taylor) returns home for vacation and encounters dancer Mara (Vivien Leigh) on Waterloo Bridge. They fall in love quickly, but just as they decide to get married, Roy is called back to camp, forcing them to part. After missing a theater performance, Mara is fired and can only rely on her friend for support. Soon, Mara learns of Roy's death in battle and is devastated. Losing her love makes Mara feel that everything has lost meaning, and for survival, she and her friend are forced into prostitution. However, fate intervenes when Mara unexpectedly meets Roy again. Though thrilled that Roy has survived, Mara is tormented by her loss of innocence. Feeling that everything is irretrievable, Mara tearfully leaves and goes to the place where they first met—Waterloo Bridge…
