The film is adapted from the lyrical novel of the same name by Mikhail Kotsyubynsky. The director disassembles the plot into eleven segments: "Ivan and Marichka," "Polonyna," "Loneliness," "Ivan and Balahna," "Everyday Life," "Christmas," "Spring Tomorrow," "Thunderstorm," "Small Hotel," "Ivan's Death," and "Devout Rituals," telling the heartbreaking love tragedies of the protagonist Ivan: first, the female protagonist Marichka tragically drowns while searching for Ivan, followed by another female protagonist Balahna's betrayal of Ivan, and the story concludes with Ivan's death at the hands of a rival. This film is a typical poetic cinema that uniquely showcases the nation's quest for survival, exploring the activities and changes in the nation's inner consciousness. It masterfully blends delicate documentary scenes with Baroque visual effects. Guided by the protagonist's emotions, the narrative adopts a vortex-like structure, weaving between the fantastical and the real. The camera seems enchanted, drawing the audience into their mysterious dreams. After its release, the film faced a ban, but was quickly lifted under pressure.
