Duan Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) and Cheng Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) are a pair of childhood friends and theater partners, with one playing the role of male and the other female. They have always worked together seamlessly, especially in the play "Farewell My Concubine," which gained them great acclaim in Beijing. As a result, the two agreed to perform "Farewell My Concubine" together for a lifetime. However, their understanding of the relationship between drama and life is fundamentally different; Duan Xiaolou believes that drama is not life, while Cheng Dieyi cannot separate the two.
When Duan Xiaolou thinks it is time to settle down, he marries the renowned courtesan Juxian (Gong Li), leading Cheng Dieyi to perceive Juxian as a shameful third party, causing Duan Xiaolou to be seen as a traitor. From then on, the love, hatred, and conflicts among the three surrounding "Farewell My Concubine" escalate with the changing tides of time, ultimately resulting in a tragedy.
