Troy Maxson (played by Denzel Washington), an African American man, was once a promising baseball star but ended up in prison due to an accidental robbery and murder case. At that time, racial segregation policies in Major League Baseball were not yet fully abolished, and opportunities for Black players were scarce. Moreover, after Troy was released from prison, he was too old to continue his baseball career, and thus he ended up as a sanitation worker in Pittsburgh. The film also explores the complex relationships between Troy, his wife, son, and friends.
