In 1930s Spain, a strange disease spreads among children, leaving those infected with no sweat glands, unable to cry, and devoid of pain sensation. To prevent further harm, authorities isolate the sick children in a convent, completely depriving them of their freedom. The imprisoned boy Benino (Ilias Stothart) is captivated by the singing next door, and he becomes good friends with the girl Inés (Liah O'Prey) through a small hole he has dug. This group of unfortunate children must learn about "pain" in a unique way. Contemporary Spain sees doctor David (Àlex Brendemühl) involved in a severe car accident; his wife Anna (Irene Montalà) dies, but their unborn child, just six months along, survives. Having temporarily escaped death, David later learns he has terminal lymphoma, with life uncertain. To obtain a bone marrow transplant, David must turn to his elderly parents, only to uncover a long-hidden secret...
