In a small courtyard in the suburban area of Beijing, Hou Dong (played by Hou Jun) and his wife Wenwen (played by Li Mingyi) raise a Tibetan mastiff named "Ben'er Tou," living a very comfortable life. Before long, this area is scheduled for urban redevelopment, and the couple moves into an apartment building. According to city management regulations, it is strictly prohibited to keep large fierce dogs in residential areas. Not long after they move into their new home with "Ben'er Tou," troubles start to come one after another. It begins with complaints from neighbors, followed by the community committee coming to mediate, and eventually even the local police getting involved, giving them a deadline to remove the dog. The couple plans to temporarily keep "Ben'er Tou" at a friend or relative's house, but unexpectedly, "Ben'er Tou" goes on a hunger strike at someone else's home. Left with no choice, Hou Dong has to bring "Ben'er Tou" back home. As the deadline approaches, Hou Dong repeatedly takes "Ben'er Tou" to the wilderness to release it, but it keeps returning home. When "Ben'er Tou" finally understands that its owner wants to abandon it, it chooses to say goodbye...
