Three years after filming "Let's Walk Happily," the Japanese fascination with gangster romance films remains unabated. Ozu approaches this genre again, with a mindset and techniques different from before; the characters' emotions are more complex and tragic, and the arrangement of each scene and detail reveals thoughtful intricacies. Continuing the roles from the previous film, it tells the story of a gangster boss and the emotional ties with two women—one good and one bad. However, this time both the gangster and the bad woman attract the good woman, and in the end, the gangster does not abandon the bad woman. Perhaps to enhance the narrative's persuasiveness, Ozu casts Tanaka Kinuyo as the female lead, whose portrayal of the bad girl is indeed subtly wicked, sometimes even pitiful. Unfortunately, Kinuyo had just starred in the deeply beloved "The Izu Dancer," making the image of the bad woman not well received by contemporary audiences. Ozu masterfully plays with the gangster film genre, and many consider this his silent film masterpiece. (27th Hong Kong International Film Festival)
