Harry (played by Woody Allen) is a talented and famous writer who leads a fragmented and chaotic life due to his neurotic and overly eccentric nature. He incorporates the people around him and the events happening in his life into his novels, turning his relationships with multiple women into published works, which ends up hurting and offending many people in his vicinity. Harry's real life constantly intertwines with the fictional plots of his novels, while he discovers that his inspiration is beginning to dry up. During his tumultuous life, he is invited back to his alma mater to receive an honorary degree, but cannot find a companion to join him. He ends up hiring a prostitute to accompany him; the next day, his friend Richard joins him, and along the way, he picks up his son from his ex-wife. What else do the four encounter on their journey, and what situations arise after they reach their destination?
Harry attempts to deconstruct his real life, the lives of the fictional characters in his novels, and the impact those characters have on his life. Can this brilliant writer, who cannot properly manage his own life but can only express his creativity through art, truly uncover the "truth" of his own existence?
