On the night of the Spring Festival holiday, the bar street in the city center is bustling and lively. Hong Kong movie star Mr. Wu (played by Andy Lau) is kidnapped at gunpoint by a group led by Zhang Hua (played by Wang Qianyuan), who is impersonating a police officer, and taken to a secluded courtyard in the suburbs. Mr. Wu unexpectedly discovers that the kidnappers have also taken another hostage, Xiao Dou (played by Cai Lu). After some negotiation with Zhang Hua, Mr. Wu manages to pull Xiao Dou back from the brink of death. The two begin a dangerous 20-hour struggle for survival, relying on each other.
The police, upon receiving the report, quickly mobilize their strongest forces. Detective team leader Xing Feng (played by Liu Ye) teams up with Cao Gang (played by Wu Ruofu) to launch an investigation. However, the cunning and arrogant kidnapper Zhang Hua possesses strong counter-surveillance skills and does not play by the rules with his accomplices or hostages, even going out alone to exchange ransom with Mr. Wu's friend (played by Lin Xue). But as he secures the ransom, he tells his accomplices that by 9 PM, regardless of whether they obtain the ransom or not, the hostages must be killed.
After several rounds of investigation and confrontation, the police track Zhang Hua's movements. Xing Feng and Cao Gang coordinate precisely to catch Zhang Hua in an extremely dangerous situation. There are still two hours left until the time agreed upon by the kidnappers to execute the hostages. As midnight approaches, Xing Feng and Cao Gang once again work together for a psychological battle against the dying Zhang Hua, finding a breakthrough at the last moment, but Zhang Hua's accomplices plan to carry out the killing ahead of schedule...
The film is adapted from the 2004 "Wu Ruofu Kidnapping Case."
