In January 1949, the People's Liberation Army surrounded 500,000 Kuomintang troops in the Pingjin area, and a full-scale attack was imminent. Whether Beijing could be peacefully liberated depended on the battle in Tianjin. At this time, Tianjin was filled with bunkers and fortifications, and soldiers were armed and ready; the city had turned into a hell before the great battle.
