In 1940, a projection truck arrived at a village on the Castilian plateau, and the children immediately gathered around. The movie being screened was "Frankenstein," with the young girl Ana (played by Ana Torrent) and her older sister Isabel (played by Isabel Tellería) in the audience. Outside the projection room, the father was obsessed with his new beehive, taking out his pocket watch to conclude his work for the day. The mother was writing a letter, though the chances of it reaching its destination were slim; she poured out her feelings of longing on the paper and mailed the letter at the train station. Ana could not forget Frankenstein for a long time, and Isabel concocted a story for her about a isolated brick house in the wasteland being the monster's lair. Alarmed, Ana ran away, but she occasionally returned to check on the brick house. Isabel seemed to know some kind of secret; she played dead and jumped over a fire, among other things. Soon, an injured soldier hid in the brick house and was discovered by Ana; that night, the soldier died from a gunshot wound. The father went to the village hall to retrieve the soldier's belongings, including a pocket watch. Ana ran out of the village by herself, and at night, she encountered Frankenstein by the lake... The film won several accolades, including the Golden Shell Award at the 1973 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
