In October 1937, during the full-scale resistance against Japan, an incident occurred in Yan'an where Huang Kegong (played by Wang Kai), the leader of the 6th team of the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University, shot and killed a young woman due to an attempted forced marriage. The perpetrator, Huang Kegong, was a combat hero and commander of the Red Army, while the victim was 16-year-old Liu Qian (played by Ma Weiwei), who had fled from Taiyuan to Yan'an to join the revolution. How should Huang Kegong be tried? The newly established Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region High Court, only two months old, placed this heavy responsibility on Chief Justice Lei Jingten (played by Cheng Taishen), who had previously participated in the Nanchang Uprising, the Guangzhou Uprising, and the Baise Uprising, having also walked the Long March with Huang Kegong. A Red Army judge was set to try a Red Army general, and the simple border court had never faced such a major case. Mao Zedong (played by Huang Haibing), He Zizhen (played by Dai Jiang), Zhang Wentian (played by Zhang Jie), and Hu Yaobang (played by Mao Hai) were all inevitably involved in the case. Facing public opinion at home and abroad, the outrage of students and citizens, and requests from senior Red Army members, Lei Jingten endured pressure from all sides and adopted an open trial and democratic judgement method for the case. Over two thousand people participated in the playground of the Shanbei Public School. Hu Yaobang, as the representative public prosecutor, spoke, followed by 12 representatives from the public. Huang Kegong defended himself in court, and finally, the five members of the court engaged in intense debate... Huang Kegong had been hoping for a special pardon from Chairman Mao, and finally, Mao Zedong’s reply came and was read at the conference. He approved the death penalty for Huang Kegong and did not grant him a reprieve.
