In the 1930s, 20-year-old Zhang Naiying (played by Tang Wei) runs away from an arranged marriage to pursue her studies but ends up being abandoned. After seeking refuge with her fiancé Wang Enjia (played by Yuan Wenkang), Zhang Naiying still cannot escape the fate of being forsaken. Fortunately, she meets the progressive young man Xiao Jun (played by Feng Shaofeng), who works at a newspaper, and they fall in love. Through Xiao Jun, Zhang Naiying becomes acquainted with the female editor Bai Lang (played by Tian Yuan), the couple Luo Feng (played by Zu Feng) and Nie Gannu (played by Wang Qianyuan), and other literary figures. After changing her name to "Xiao Hong," she gains the approval of Lu Xun (played by Wang Zhiwen) and Xu Guangping (played by Ding Jiali), and later meets Hu Feng (played by Feng Lei), Mei Zhi (played by Yuan Quan), Jiang Xijin (played by Zhang Yi), Ding Ling (played by Hao Lei), Duanmu Hongliang (played by Zhu Yawen), and others. Despite the constant warfare and upheaval, with the encouragement of her contemporaries, Xiao Hong gradually steps into the "golden era" of her writing.
