Freddy (played by Terence Stamp) is a very reclusive young man whose only hobby is collecting and creating butterfly specimens. Freddy harbors a deep affection for the beautiful and gentle Miranda (played by Samantha Eggar), but he chooses to bury these feelings deep inside. One day, Freddy gets lucky and wins the lottery, receiving a large sum of money. With this money, he buys a villa in the suburbs and kidnaps Miranda, locking her in the basement. Naive Freddy believes that as long as he treats Miranda well and shows her his good side, she will eventually fall in love with him. However, he does not realize that everything he does only deepens Miranda's fear and loathing of him. Ultimately, Miranda cannot endure Freddy's torment, and her young life slowly fades away over time.
