TV station director Xia Ning (played by Chi Jia) is carefree and unreliable in speech and action. The chief editor Bai Ding (played by Cao Xiwen) assigns him a task: come up with a rescue plan for the program "The Warm and Cold of Human Life" within seven days, or he will be fired. Xia Ning recruits extra actor Zhang Dahu (played by Tian Xinping), asking him to play "Old Zhang, the Coal Seller," but Zhang Dahu dreams of playing an emperor. After much effort, Xia Ning finally trains this "future star," completing the task assigned by the editor-in-chief, and he gains the attention of the station's leaders and peers. A few days later, the station leaders decide to adjust the program and invite Zhang Dahu to do entertainment interviews. To prevent Dahu from revealing his role as the coal seller, Xia Ning reluctantly spends a significant amount on hush money.
