Nio (played by Alberto Sordi), the workshop manager at an automobile factory in Milan, plans to use his half-month vacation to return to his hometown in Sicily. Before he leaves, his boss asks him to bring a gift to the Sicilian mafia chief, Vincenzo. Upon arriving in his hometown with his wife Marta, Nio is overwhelmed with excitement as he introduces his large family to her. Some of his old friends have died from gun violence, some are currently in prison, and a very few have become shells of their former selves due to betrayal, while the remaining acquaintances are slightly wary of Nio's "Milanese" ways. Nio visits Vincenzo and earns the mafia elder's approval; in the war-torn past, Nio was one of Vincenzo's trusted subordinates. Marta gains acceptance from her husband's family through her efforts, and Nio reconnects with the mindset aligned with his hometown traditions. One night, Nio is awakened by his father and is tasked with carrying out a mafia assassination mission... This film won the Golden Shell Award at the 1963 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
