Although this story has been adapted into films and television series multiple times, director Li Hanxiang presents the scenes in the Qing palace in a unique way and makes changes to the plot, making it worth watching. For example, instead of the Empress Dowager opposing the reform, it is portrayed that the loyal subjects, in order to preserve their titles and wealth, are unwilling to kneel for a long time, emphasizing her sense of responsibility. On the night of Guangxu's escape from Yingtai, the Empress Dowager also visits Guangxu with the Empress at night, and intends to restore power to Guangxu. These details give the Empress Dowager a more human and genuine emotional depth. However, the portrayal of the six gentlemen is too brief, which is a significant flaw in the film.
