The series is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead, telling the story of a Black slave girl, Cora, who seeks the rumored "underground railroad" to escape a plantation in Georgia. During her search, she discovers that there is indeed a literal underground railroad that helps slaves escape from their brutal lives. Jenkins will direct all 11 episodes, each lasting 1 hour.
