Adapted from Wang Shuo's novel "Half is Flame, Half is Seawater." In prison, the labor reformatory inmate Zheng Tian writes his experiences into a script, which is later adopted by a film studio. After serving his sentence, he is invited by the studio to play the male lead A. One day, when he reports to the filming crew, he is amazed to find that the actress B, who plays the female lead Bai Yun, is strikingly similar to her real-life counterpart. After filming begins, Zheng Tian seems to return to his former life: A lost his mother at a young age and was abandoned on the streets after his father remarried, gradually succumbing to a life of crime. He teams up with Yuan Yuan, using Dan Dan's beauty as bait to rob taxi drivers and pedestrians at night, living a life of luxury and extravagance. However, at times he also fixes bicycles for free on the streets and gives up his seat to women holding infants on buses. He believes that human nature is half devil and half angel. One day, he meets Bai Yun, an art student, at a subway station, and they are drawn to each other and become close. After learning about A's past, Bai Yun forgives him. A vows to Bai Yun to bid farewell to crime. But good times are short-lived; when old accomplices reappear, he succumbs to temptation and falls back into the depths of sin. He ultimately ends up in prison, and Bai Yun is expelled from school for failing to report his situation. She attempts to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills but is saved and later goes to Buddhist Island. Zheng Tian once participated in a cultural troupe of inmates performing at a labor reform farm near Buddhist Island and, under the organization’s arrangement, meets Bai Yun again. He expresses remorse for ruining her future, while Bai Yun, having endured suffering, states that she will devote her life to doing good as the conclusion of her existence.
