Dale (Seth Rogen) has a job that both he and others hate—process server. The handsome classmates of his high school girlfriend Angie constantly make Dale feel uncomfortable, so smoking marijuana becomes his best escape and even belief. Dale regularly buys marijuana from the small-time dealer Saul (James Franco), who considers him a friend and sells him his best strain, "Pineapple Express," but Dale views Saul as a more unsuccessful loser than himself. That night, Dale accidentally witnesses local drug lord Red murdering a cop, and in a panic, he escapes, leaving behind the rare Pineapple Express at the crime scene. Fearing that Red will kill him to cover up the crime, Dale and Saul must go on the run, but their cautious yet clumsy attempts to hide only draw more people into the mess. As two characters prone to avoidance, they gradually learn to confront their weaknesses through this event…
