The story takes place in the 1970s. One evening, the daughter of Uncle Luo, Bitao (played by Chi Peng), drives a broken cart to Luo Village, carrying with her the ousted local committee secretary Gu Tiezheng (played by Wei Beiyuan) and the overseas Chinese Ge Yi (played by Midiqi). Ge Yi holds his son Chen Xiang, whose wife recently died at the re-education camp. Although Bitao's family takes care of him, it is quite inconvenient to have an infant. In desperation, Ge Yi writes to his relatives for help in raising his son, but this action leads to imprisonment. Out of sympathy, Bitao tries her best to help him, which is discovered by her lover Yusheng (played by Xu Weiping). The commune gives the university student quota to the politically correct Bitao and Yusheng. While filling out the form, Bitao is flirted with by Director Xu of the Revolutionary Committee, and she angrily returns home.
