During World War II in southern France, tough U.S. Army lieutenant Sam Loggins (played by Frank Sinatra) and the arrogant radio operator Britt Harris (played by Tony Curtis) both fall for French girl Monique Blair (played by Natalie Wood). When they discover that Blair's father is Black and she is biracial, the two men find themselves in conflict due to racial prejudices. Lieutenant Loggins overcomes his potential biases, but Harris does not. During the fighting, Loggins loses an arm, and after the war, he goes to be with Blair.
