In the 1940s, former boxing champion Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) is the most powerful mob boss in Los Angeles, running activities such as prostitution and gambling while bribing the LAPD and judges, establishing his reign of terror in the city. LAPD officer John O'Mara (Josh Brolin), who despises evil and has never feared Mickey, has just shut down one of his brothels. This time, Los Angeles Sheriff Bill Parker decides to take on Mickey in a final showdown, instructing John to organize a secret team to eliminate him. On his wife's advice, John recruits his friend Jerry (Ryan Gosling), who is also the boyfriend of Mickey's lover Grace (Emma Stone); sharpshooter Max Kennard; equally righteous African American officer Coleman Harris; former intelligence agent Conwell Keeler; and Max's apprentice, Mexican Navidad Ramirez, to form the Gangster Squad. They install listening devices in Mickey's home, repeatedly sabotage his operations, and dismantle several of his gambling dens. They think victory is assured, only to find that the real battle is just beginning...
