The film tells the story of the first group of African American pilots in World War II, who overcame institutional and racial barriers to form a special experimental bomber escort squadron known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Their planes were all marked with "red tails," which became their nickname. The "Red Tails" were the first all-Black pilot group in American military history, trained for war and deployed to Alabama, ready to fight. There, they faced rampant racism and harassment, and their flying and combat abilities were often questioned. However, the "Red Tails" proved their excellence in the air, prompting the Air Force to abolish segregation. They played an indispensable role in conflicts with Italy and Germany.
