Set against the backdrop of World War I, the film tells the story of three French prisoners escaping from a German concentration camp. Three French pilots, Bodiot, Mike, and Rosenthal, are shot down by the German army during a mission and taken to a POW camp. Bodiot and the German camp commandant, Rofenstein, both come from noble backgrounds and share similar political views, leading them to become friends in prison. The three men later discover that their fellow prisoners are plotting an escape and are digging an escape tunnel. Mike and Rosenthal join the digging effort. In the end, they successfully escape together, and the Germans pursue them. During their flight, Bodiot is brought down by Rofenstein, while the other two French prisoners, Mike and Rosenthal, reach a German farmhouse where, with the help of the farmer's wife, they go through various hardships to escape to Switzerland. This film is one of the earliest escape films and is regarded as one of the greatest "escape movies," as well as a masterpiece of anti-war sentiment by director Jean Renoir.
