In the autumn of 1949, the People's Liberation Army arrived at Hani Mountain. On the first day the troops entered the mountain, they encountered the Black-faced Men who were robbing the local landlord's horse caravan. The landlord reported to the PLA that the bandit Ma Peng had already fled the country, and that there was only a group of "Black-faced Bandits" who "committed all kinds of atrocities." However, the locals reported that the "Black-faced Bandits" only robbed the landlord and Ma Peng, and never harmed the suffering people. A reconnaissance platoon of the PLA decided to rely on the local community to quickly gather information about Ma Peng's bandit gang and the "Black-faced Bandits." Hani soldier Galo entered the village to inquire about his beloved girl, Zongni. Zongni's mother, Aunt Ige, informed him that Zongni had been taken by Ma Peng and sold abroad. Galo was heartbroken. As the PLA was working with the local community, they were suddenly attacked. Shamu, who was forced to join Ma Peng's gang, returned to the village at night to visit his wife, but smeared his face black. Platoon leader Daqi and Galo analyzed and determined that Ma Peng's bandit gang did not escape abroad; their disguised attacks aimed to lure the PLA to ambush them in the black pine forest. In a cave deep within the black pine forest, the Black-faced Men were reading a PLA announcement. "Big Brother" Zongni recalled her painful past—three years ago, Ma Peng's bandit gang tried to sell her and over a dozen of her sisters to foreign bosses. To resist the bandits' humiliation, Zongni grabbed a gun and shot the bandit leader. With the help of an old hunter, she and her companions escaped. Since then, the girls had homes they could not return to, so they blackened their faces and hid in the dense forest. … Enraged, Zongni tore the announcement to shreds. She exited the cave and recognized Galo, who was scouting in the forest, and became very excited. One night, Zongni stealthily returned home, but was caught by Galo. Misunderstanding that her sister was injured by Galo, she slapped him hard and disappeared into the rainy night. Ma Peng learned of the landlord's intent to flee abroad and deliberately leaked this information to Aunt Ige, attempting to use it to lure the Black-faced Men out of the black pine forest. Shamu, who had feelings for the PLA, quietly reported this to them. Galo entered the cave to convince the Black-faced Men. The Black-faced Men were unwilling to be treated as bandits, and one by one, they removed their head wraps, revealing their faces. As Galo regretted wrongly blaming the girls, Aunt Ige brought news that the landlord was trying to escape abroad. Galo couldn't stop it, and Zongni led the girls out of the black pine forest. The PLA intercepted the landlord as planned. The remaining bandits launched a violent attack on the Black-faced Men, and Ma Peng's bullet struck Galo, while Zongni's bamboo arrow killed Ma Peng. The Ma Peng bandit gang was completely apprehended.
