Buck (Josh Hartnett) and Lee (Aaron Eckhart) are elite figures in the boxing world, with Lee being known as "Mr. Fire" and Buck as "Mr. Ice." Lee works in the police department's enforcement unit, while Buck is somewhat down on his luck. During a boxing match at the police department, Buck deliberately loses to Lee to join the police, becoming Lee's partner and close friend. They are assigned to investigate a serial murder case involving a guy named Nash. During an ambush operation, Lee shoots a suspicious individual in order to save Buck but fails to capture Nash. Subsequently, they discover the body of a victim known as "the Black Dahlia," Short, nearby the crime scene, whose death is horrific. Lee quickly abandons the investigation into Nash and focuses solely on Short's case. Additionally, the early release of Bobby, a bank robber captured by Lee years ago, adds to Lee's stress. To help his partner, Buck starts his own investigation, but as they delve deeper, hidden truths about Lee begin to emerge.
