In the early spring of 1958, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region reached the peak of the Great Leap Forward. Patamuhan, the deputy director of the Oasis Agricultural Production Cooperative, returned after studying in the mainland. She actively responded to the higher authorities' call for food self-sufficiency and advocated for cultivating grain by reclaiming land in Shayuanzi. However, the cooperative director Hasimu believed that the Oasis Cooperative had always focused on cash crops and that the source of grain mainly relied on purchasing government subsidized grain, and this principle should be maintained in the future. Encouraged by the speculator Mushaya, he was determined to make money from sideline businesses. Patamuhan did not oppose the development of sideline businesses but believed that increasing grain production was fundamental. Ignoring Hasimu's objections, she relied on the poor and lower-middle farmers to organize cooperative members to reclaim land and received enthusiastic help from Halik, the director of the Shayuanzi Agricultural Cooperative, and the members, planting wheat. Unexpectedly, just as the wheat seedlings were thriving, an eighth-grade gale swept in, covering the wheat fields with flying sand and damaging many fruit trees. Patamuhan immediately organized the masses for rescue, while Hasimu believed that the wheat was beyond saving and suggested giving up. At the moment everyone was busy coping with the disaster, Mushaya and the landlord Turanbake were gleefully watching and inciting Hasimu to pull some of the sideline workers out for short-term jobs, intending to sell the cooperative's cotton and vegetable seeds in the free market at high prices. Patamuhan timely identified the issue and advised Hasimu not to listen to Mushaya and the others. However, Hasimu misunderstood Patamuhan as trying to undermine him for her own interests. Later, with Halik's help, Patamuhan saved the wheat seedlings and achieved a bountiful harvest. Subsequently, Halik's grandfather, Sayiti, approached Patamuhan’s father, Reyim, for a marriage proposal, but Mushaya spread rumors to sabotage it. Hasimu, without understanding the situation, rushed to the joint reclamation site of the two cooperatives, having a big argument with Patamuhan and Halik, accusing them of blurring the lines between public and private matters regarding the merger of cooperatives. Village chief Hashan and Secretary Zhang realized this was not just Hasimu's ideological issue but was likely instigated by bad actors, and instructed Patamuhan to investigate. Relying on the power of the masses, Patamuhan quickly grasped the evidence of Mushaya and Turanbake spreading rumors, sabotaging, and stealing collective property. Faced with the facts, Mushaya and Turanbake had to bow their heads and confess. With the help of the party organization, Hasimu, awakened from his ignorance, regretted being deceived and used by enemies. In the end, the Oasis, Shayuanzi, and other agricultural cooperatives merged to form a People's Commune, and the canals and channels were completed, with clear spring water flowing to the newly cultivated fields, transforming the millennia-old yellow sand into an oasis.
