In the Yellow Earth Plateau of northern Shaanxi, a poor girl named Cuiqiao (played by Xue Bai) has been betrothed since childhood by her father (played by Tan Tuo). Gu Qing (played by Wang Xueqi), a member of the Eighth Route Army's cultural troupe, comes to Cuiqiao's home to collect folk songs. After some time, they feel as close as family. Gu Qing tells Cuiqiao about women's marriage autonomy in Yan'an, making her yearn for more. Although her father is kind, he is also ignorant and wants Cuiqiao to marry in April. As Gu Qing is about to leave, Cuiqiao wishes to go to Yan'an with him, but he is unable to help.
