"The Cyclist" is a film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, telling the story of numerous Afghan refugees who flee to Iran during the war, each narrating their tragic tales. The protagonist of "The Cyclist" is an unfortunate Afghan refugee. In Iran, his wife is gravely ill, work is hard, and he faces discrimination. In order to save money for her treatment, the honest man exhausts every possibility, taking on a seemingly absurd job: performing on a bicycle for a week without getting off. The organizer is a profit-driven boss who, in pursuit of gain, invites many spectators to make the event grand. Thus, everyone in the town becomes focused on this performance, betting as if they are watching a grand occasion... The poor Afghan man "performs" on the bicycle for 24 hours a day, utterly exhausted, yet he endures in hopes of earning a reward, suffering inhuman pain. By the seventh day of the performance, he is already a shell of a person.
