Old Red Army soldier Lu Chun (played by Zhao Dan) returns to his hometown after many years, intending to establish a logging site. His idea is supported by his old comrade Zhan Guocai (played by Gao Bo) and the daughter of a martyr, Shanque (played by Zhu Xijuan). Soon, a group of Shanghai educated youth arrives at the forest farm. Considering they are newcomers, Lu Chun believes that in order to retain them, he must make them fall in love with the forest area. He cares for them meticulously in their daily lives and appoints Shanque as their team leader. As time passes, the youths' attitudes begin to change; some are able to work peacefully, while others look down on physical labor, believing that logging work is a waste for educated youth. In response to the issues that arise, Lu Chun conducts timely and patient persuasive education, and most of the youths are able to settle down and work.
