Adapted from Kafka's unfinished novel "America," but its focus is not on the real America; it resembles a fable about America without a detailed timeline. Karl Rossmann relocates to America at the invitation of his uncle due to a scandal; however, he cannot escape the old continent's customs, and worse, the class structure in Europe prevents him from making a living through his own efforts. This film version highlights the cruel and unpredictable class relations created by capitalist society, while remaining faithful to the original without adding a conclusion. The consistent style of the Straubs perfectly combines with Kafka's atmosphere: fixed mid-shots, expressionless actors, deliberately stiff bodily movements and language, emphasized close-ups, and intentionally abrupt camera movements. Therefore, we can seek experimental possibilities in adapting Kafka's work.
