The story takes place during World War II, where British soldier Eric (played by Colin Firth) is captured by the Japanese army and sent to work as a laborer on the Thailand-Burma Railway. Eric secretly hides a radio, and by listening to broadcasts, he learns that Japan is already nearing defeat in the war and won’t last much longer. He and his comrades rely on this small comfort and hope to survive. Eventually, Eric's secret is discovered by the Japanese army, and he is subjected to inhumane torture, which leaves him with immense psychological trauma that continues to affect his life even thirty years after the war, when he has started his own family. One day, Eric learns that one of the officers who participated in his torture, Takashi Nagase (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), is still alive, and he decides to visit him.
