This film is based on the notorious 1993 Bre-X gold mining company fraud case. The Bre-X gold mining company was a Canadian mining company established in a basement, listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange in July 1989 as a junk stock worth about 25 cents per share. Later, the company acquired mining rights to a site in Indonesia and created the illusion of high gold content by mixing gold powder into the rock. As a result, the company's stock price skyrocketed, reaching 200 dollars by April 1996. In October 1996, the fraud perpetrated by Bre-X gold mining company was exposed, but thousands of investors had already lost their assets to the company’s founders and geologists. The story of "Gold Mine" follows modern explorer Kenny Wells, played by Matthew McConaughey, as he yearns to uncover a major mine. Driven by this dream, Wells embarks on a high-stakes adventure with a similarly unlucky geologist to search for gold deep in an unknown rainforest of Indonesia. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Wells' girlfriend, Kay, who continually supports his exploration endeavors, but their relationship faces severe challenges during the quest for gold.
