During the Soviet era, the female director of a statistics bureau in Moscow, Lyudmila Prokhorova Kalugin (played by Alisa Freyndlikh), is highly competent and career-focused, contrasting sharply with her private life, where love has yet to blossom. Her stern and serious demeanor earns her the nickname "Cold Blooded Animal" among the staff. The mature-looking statistician Andrey Myagkov (played by Andrey Myagkov), despite single-handedly raising two children, remains optimistic and well-liked by colleagues.
