In a vibrant 19th-century Mexican town, the Gypsy girl Yesenia (played by Jacqueline Andere) and her companions revel in song and dance. She is proud and intelligent, like a thorny rose, and often faces discrimination from white people. Consequently, Yesenia occasionally steals money to punish those who exploit their power, unaware of her own complicated background. One day, while fortune-telling at a tavern, she meets the self-assured white officer Osvaldo (played by Jorge Lavat). As they get to know each other, this pair of lovers falls deeply in love. The sweetness and bitterness of love torment them. Brave Osvaldo asks the Gypsy chief for permission to marry Yesenia, and with the guidance and matchmaking of Yesenia's grandmother, the wild young woman finally marries Osvaldo. Happiness is always fleeting, and Yesenia and her husband face a long period of separation, putting their love to the test...
