In 1939, Germany launched a blitzkrieg attack on Poland, quickly occupying most of its territory. The beautiful and kind Antonina and her husband Dr. Jan Żabiński operated a zoo that suffered heavy losses due to German bombings and faced the risk of closure. As the German forces aggressively occupied the area, the Polish Jews were driven from their homes. Unable to bear the thought of her friends being uprooted, Antonina discussed hiding them in the zoo with Jan. After witnessing the tragic fates of many Jews, Jan decided to make the zoo a temporary refuge for them. The couple turned to their old friend, Lutz Heck, a German officer, for help. As a zoologist, Heck was eager to use the zoo’s bison to try and breed the extinct European bison, so he readily agreed to their plan to convert the zoo into a pig farm under the guise of providing pork to the Germans. Jan rescued batch after batch of Jews by transporting feed from the Jewish ghetto. Antonina housed these Jews in the empty animal enclosures, and every night they would emerge from the darkness to share meals and conversations. As the war escalated, patriot Jan joined the Warsaw resistance but was injured and captured in battle, leaving him missing and unaccounted for. Alone and overwhelmed, Antonina continued to raise their two children while sheltering Jews as they fled. After the war, Antonina and Jan returned to the zoo to rebuild their home with their friends.
