The story takes place in 1950s England, where Lydia (Holliday Grainger) is an ordinary housewife living there. After being ruthlessly abandoned by her husband, Lydia, in desperation, begins a struggling life with her son Charlie. Due to family circumstances, Charlie suffers bullying at school, and their lives often descend into despair. Just when they are at their most desperate, a doctor named Jane (Anna Paquin) moves in next door to Lydia.
