Popular stage actress Charlotte (Marlene Dietrich) hurriedly knocks on her lover Jonathan's (Richard Todd) door one morning, frantically informing him that she has just killed her husband. Charlotte is even more anxious because she is about to perform at the theater, yet she is wearing a dress stained with blood. Jonathan comforts Charlotte and goes to her home to help her find other clothes. As he is about to leave, he stages the scene, but this delays him and is seen by Charlotte's maid. Consequently, Jonathan is forced to turn to his admirer Eve (Jane Wyman). As Eve drives Jonathan to escape the police pursuit, he recounts the events, and upon hearing them, Eve is determined to go through fire and water for her beloved. However, there is another truth to the matter.
