Salust (Louis de Funès) is a rude, boorish, greedy Spanish nobleman who loves flattery, while his servant is poor and kind-hearted. Due to a court conspiracy, Salust loses his privileges, leading him to seek revenge. Meanwhile, his servant falls in love with the German queen, providing Salust with an opportunity... This film is a major work by Funès following "The Great Escape," with the second male lead being the French actor Yves Montand. The director is the renowned French comedic genius, Gérard Oury (who also wrote "The Great Escape" and helped make Funès famous). Funès excels at portraying ironic, greedy characters, which makes this film highly entertaining. Distinct from other comedies with similar themes, this movie employs surrealist creative techniques to a certain extent, qualifying it as a surreal comedy/drama. If you enjoy Spanish court culture, renaissance architecture, medieval inquisitions, various rituals, flamenco dancing, knights, deserts... and Funès' unique acting style, you definitely don't want to miss this very traditional and authentic French classic comedy.
