"Winchester '73" is the best of the five famous Westerns from the 1950s created by James Stewart and Anthony Mann (the other four being "Bend of the River", "The Man From Laramie", "The Naked Spur", and "The Far Country"), and is considered a major contributor to the resurgence of Westerns at the box office. This film also made a historic breakthrough: from this film onward, stars no longer relied solely on salaries (even if exorbitantly high) but rather on a share of the film's box office profits. This approach made James Stewart a lot of money and forever changed the way business was conducted in Hollywood. The film itself is also impressive. Anthony Mann’s direction is sharp and psychologically astute, portraying a rugged man trapped in ambiguity. Cowboy Lin McAdam (played by James Stewart) tracks down a valuable Winchester 1873 rifle, leading to a series of adventures. The final scene is spectacular: on a cliff, two men draw their guns and shoot at each other, with the magnificent scenery leaving a lasting impression. "Winchester '73" placed James Stewart among the top ten box office stars, despite previous doubts from film studios about his acting talent. Just like the real 1873 Winchester rifle, "Winchester '73" is a "one in a millennium."
