The film is directed by Kirill Serebrennikov (Petrov's Flu, Summer) and written by Paweł Pawlikowski (Ida, Cold War), based on a story by French writer Emmanuel Carrère, depicting the biographical novel of Russian radical poet and dissident Edward Limonov. The novel includes a description: "The shocking adventures of a radical Soviet poet: a homeless man in New York, a sensation in France, a political figure in Russia." Limonov's personal life is full of legendary tales; in Manhattan, he is a rich man's butler, in Paris, he is a writer, and in Russia, he is the leader of the National Bolshevik Party.
