This series is adapted from Thomas Mallon's novel of the same name, containing elements of romance and political thriller, documenting the unpredictable romantic history between two very different men who meet under the shadow of McCarthyism in Washington. Hawkins Fuller is a handsome and charismatic man who maintains a lucrative behind-the-scenes job in the political arena. Hawkins has always avoided emotional entanglements until he meets Tim Laughlin, a young man full of idealism and religious beliefs. As their romance begins, Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on "subversives" and "sexual deviants," opening one of the darkest periods in American history in the 20th century. Over the course of 40 years, Hawkins and Tim intersect in various contexts—Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, drug-fueled disco hedonism in the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis in the 1980s—while facing multiple obstacles from the world and themselves.
