King Nicholas III of Belgium is tragically shot in Sarajevo, injuring his ear. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a sanatorium on a small island in Croatia, which was once a summer retreat for Tito. The king's attendants desperately try to prevent him from watching the news, so he doesn't learn that events back home have led to the disintegration of Europe, but ultimately their efforts are in vain. The fragile king demands to return home immediately, but the overbearing sanatorium director imposes a strict rehabilitation plan. A delegation from Vienna arrives at the sanatorium, and their leader announces shocking news: Belgium's last king will become Europe's first emperor. However, the king does not wish to have his fate dictated by others and decides to take control of his own destiny.
