In the late 1950s, the now best-selling author Inoue Kosaku (played by Koji Yakusho) takes a break from his busy life to visit his elderly parents in his hometown of Yanaka. Back in Tokyo, his wife Mizu (played by Mariko Akama), eldest daughter Ikuko (played by Mimura), and second daughter Noriko (played by Akiko Kikuchi) are tirelessly supporting him, while his rebellious youngest daughter Kotoko (played by Aoi Miyazaki) is subtly resisting her father’s authority. Shortly after returning to Tokyo, the news of his father's death (played by Rentaro Mikuni) arrives, leaving Kosaku engulfed in unexplainable emotions. As time passes, the Inoue family comes together and drifts apart, the girls gradually grow up and develop their own lives and secrets, while the once dominant Kosaku begins to feel the loneliness of impending old age. Meanwhile, the mother Yaeko (played by Kirin Kiki) experiences a decline in her memory as she ages. Torn between fulfilling his duties as a son and harboring resentment from being "abandoned" by his mother during childhood, Kosaku grapples with his complex emotions, revealing an unbreakable bond that lasts a lifetime... The film is adapted from the autobiographical novel "My Mother (わが母の記)" by Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue, which is divided into three parts: "Under the Flower," "Moonlight," and "Snow Surface."
