Mary (Maureen O'Sullivan) and Brick (Henry Fonda) are a young couple about to get married, and their relationship is very close. Brick is a taxi driver who spent a fortune on a taxi and decided to start a taxi company with his friend Joe (Alan Barkeste). Just the night before Mary and Brick are to marry, a terrifying robbery occurs in a cinema, where three robbers kill a cinema employee and flee in a taxi. The police immediately begin to investigate all taxi drivers in the area, including Brick and Joe. Unfortunately, all eleven eyewitnesses present identify Brick and Joe as the robbers, leading to their imprisonment. In an effort to prove her husband's innocence, Mary tirelessly gathers evidence, but faces obstruction from the police.
