Dr. Kate Forster (played by Sandra Bullock) is a busy doctor who moves away from her riverside house in the suburbs. Before leaving, she places a letter in the mailbox, hoping the next tenant will help deal with her mail. Soon, she returns to the old site and discovers a letter from architect Alex Wyler (played by Keanu Reeves). One letter follows another. It turns out they are two years apart in time, and while they are surprised, they are delighted to become pen pals, feeling each other’s presence in different spaces again and again. As their love grows, Alex decides he wants to meet Kate, but neither of them knows what this time-crossing romance will bring them.
