This HBO-produced film is another war realistic film by "Hamburger Hill" director John Irvin, set against the backdrop of World War II and the bloody Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. After an entire line of comrades is annihilated by the enemy, the only survivor, Private David Manning (Ron Eldard, "Comet" and "Band of Brothers"), is promoted to sergeant. Unable to bear the pressure of leading new troops, Manning applies for discharge on the grounds of being mentally unfit. However, Manning's commanding officer (Martin Donovan, "Her and Him and Them") offers him a deal: if he captures a German outpost, he will submit Manning's discharge application. But in the brutal and merciless war, what matters is not victory, but how to survive the battlefield. When it comes to epic films about World War II, "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" may have garnered more attention, but this film is definitely a must-see and does not fall short as one of the best war realistic films.&*&vod_class: Drama, Action, War
