Philip (Angus Macfadyen) has suffered for a long time because of a secret in his heart: he is actually a homosexual. Finally, he decides to no longer lead a life of hiding, and he chooses to confide in his family. One day, Philip approaches his father, Owen (Brian Cox), and reveals his sexual orientation, creating a storm of emotions within Owen. In fact, Owen is also a homosexual, but he chose to conform to societal norms and married Philip's mother, Rose (Eileen Atkins). However, all these years, Owen has been tormented by this choice, and Philip's coming out feels like a revelation for Owen.
