The wizard Merlin (Nicol Williamson) bestows upon King Arthur (Nigel Terry) a magical sword. Before his death, King Arthur inserts the sword into a giant stone and establishes a will stating that whoever can pull the sword from the stone will be entitled to become King of England. Years later, Arthur's illegitimate son stands before the stone and successfully pulls out the sword, thus inheriting the throne and becoming the new King Arthur. He then marries a woman named Guinevere (Cherie Lunghi) and establishes the Knights of the Round Table, ushering in one of the most glorious eras in history. However, good times do not last long as Guinevere falls in love with the knight Lancelot (Nicholas Clay), while scandals within the family threaten the king's rule.
